Grayson's New Room

6/10/2012

We have a precious little four and a half year old son that we are so thankful for.  Recently we decided he had outgrown his toddler bed and was ready for his "big boy bed," so we put our heads together and multiple projects followed (we like projects):  Daddy decided he wanted to make the new bed, with drawers for storage underneath, and a toy box to match; Mommy decided she wanted to make a quilt for the new bed; and so they started planning, gathering tools and working diligently on the new projects...now the projects are all completed, and Grayson has a new room.  I've shared some pictures here of his new little space, if you'd like to see it.
Picture
This is the view from the door of his little room, and it is little, so we've packed it with loads of storage, including the lighted built-ins my husband and I made, which now house his books, breakable keepsakes, toys and shoes.
Picture
Here's view of his new bed and quilt, and the green throw was knitted by his Uncle Matt. We're keeping the rocking chair that we rocked him in as a baby; instead of being rocked to sleep now, he wants us to sit and rock in it while he goes to sleep in his bed, after his books have been read, of course--he LOVES his book time.
Picture
Here's a good view of the bed and the two huge storage boxes we built to house his favorite toys, shoes, flashlights for playing under the covers after he's supposed to be sleeping, and what nots like that.

Another view of one of the storage drawers with rollers on the bottom for easy access. Believe it or not, we used left over oak hardwood flooring from doing the upstairs studio to make the bed, both storage boxes and the toy box...we love to use materials we have on hand as much as we can, and it was so fitting for this project! It's virtually indestructible!
Picture
Here's the toy box, with a checker board on top. My husband wanted this piece to have a real aged look. It is also on wheels for moving around easily.
Picture
The inside has a special box for keeping his checkers in, that was my wonderful husband's creative idea---he's so talented with his hands and makes beautiful furniture for our home...he comes up with amazing ideas that astound me.
Picture
My husband hand cut these checkers and painted them himself. They are red and black, though the black looks almost blue in this picture. Anyone fancy a game? I bet there will be many played here!

The moon seemed to be the most wonderful place to personalize this quilt. It started as a duvet cover from Ikea, but with a little seam ripping, adding batting, and free hand motion quilting, became a soft and cuddly quilt for my little man.
Picture
This is not new, I hung it when he was just a few weeks old, but it's something I love and want him to know for sure! It's Shel Silverstein's poem, "Anything." This is the message I'd love to give all the worlds' children! Click on the picture to read the poem.
Picture
Another view of the quilt with stars all over and the cutest little frogs, one riding the bike over the moon, and the other laying on a little moon 'hammock.' I thought this was adorable when I saw it, and right away knew I could keep up the curtains I used and loved in his nursery.
As I worked on these projects with my husband, and put this entry together this evening, I was struck by how fortunate our little Grayson is, he seems to have a 'charmed' little life.  I am so thankful for him and that he has so many people who love him so deeply, there is nothing more important in all the world than that!!
